Making the Most of a Family Beach Vacation
To get the most of a family beach vacation, it is best to plan a variety of activities that take full advantage of the water. Many activities beyond swimming and building sand castles can be enjoyed no matter where the family beach vacation takes place, while others may be specific to the location. All, however, will be sure to be enjoyed by the entire family.
Waterskiing
Waterskiing is one activity many families enjoy while on a family beach vacation. This sport is popular in many countries around the world and is likely to be an option no matter the location of the family beach vacation. Waterskiing generally takes place in lakes or rivers, though it can also be enjoyed in sheltered bay areas of oceans as well.
To waterski, the family will need skis made specifically for the sport. These can generally be rented at popular family beach vacation locations. Water skis are different from snow skis in that they are somewhat wider. Otherwise, they are quite similar to snow skis. After becoming skilled at waterskiing, some people choose to use only one ski. Either way, the skier is pulled from behind a boat while holding on to a rope.
Beginners usually start off at slower when learning how to waterski, but it is actually easier to waterski at faster speeds because it provides more stability and lift. Kids love learning how to waterski and may actually be a bit more brave than their parents when learning this new sport!
Parasailing
Parasailing is another sport that can be enjoyed on a family beach vacation, though this activity will have to be reserved for the parents and older children. With parasailing, a person is pulled behind a boat while attached to a parachute as he or she floats high above the water. It is possible to also have two people parasail at the same time, which might be a good option for a parent and an older child. Not only can this help soothe the nerves of a nervous child (or maybe parent!), it also provides a great opportunity for bonding and sharing in a special experience.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling is a great activity that can take place during any family beach vacation, but certain locations will be more rewarding than others because the water is clearer and the specimens that can be viewed are more spectacular. Popular locations for snorkeling include the Caribbean, the Great Barrier Reef, Galapagos Islands, the Red Sea, and the Hawaiian Islands. In these settings, the family can enjoy seeing specimen such as coral reefs, octopuses, exotic fish, sea urchins, starfish, jellyfish, sea turtles, seaweed, kelp, and mollusks. Sandier areas may also bring rays and flatfish.
With snorkeling, all family members capable of swimming can enjoy hovering near the surface of the water while using a mask to see and a snorkel to breathe. Often, a person engaged in snorkeling also wears swimfins to assist in flotation and propulsion.
Scuba Diving
Scuba diving is another excellent activity to engage in while on a family beach vacation. The word SCUBA is an acronym for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, but the term is also used to describe the activity itself. To go scuba diving, family members need to be specially trained in how to use the equipment in order to stay underwater for long periods of time. Scuba diving allows for family members to explore the water at much deeper levels than snorkeling, which can result in encounters with a much greater variety of sea life.
Sailing and Boating on a Family Beach Vacation
Sailing and boating are great choices for those families who are nervous about the idea of engaging in more adventurous sports, for those with very young children, or for those looking to just have a family beach vacation filled with relaxation. Many family beach vacation resorts and popular locales offer sailing and boat rental. Or, families can pay to take tours of oceans and lakes, where they still might be able to spot some of nature's water creatures. If not, families will still enjoy the peace and serenity brought by these activities.
