Hawaii Big Island

From LoveToKnow Travel

The big island of Hawaii, the largest of the Hawaiian Islands, is a combination of many varied elements. It is home to Volcanoes National Park, which includes Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes as well as Mauna Loa, the world's largest. The island also boasts a variety of botanical gardens and orchid farms, black sand beaches, cattle ranches, ski (yes, ski) resorts, and a number of luxurious resorts.

Volcanoes National Park

The most popular of the Big Island attractions, Volcanoes National Park, established in 1916, encompasses 377 square miles. It includes Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world as well as Mauna Loa and Mauna Ulu. Visitors can view exhibits about the volcanoes at the Kilauea visitors' Center and the Jagger Museum. The park also offers unique hiking and camping opportunities. Intrepid travelers can stay the night at Volcano House, located along the rim of Kilauea. It's the oldest continuously operating hotel in Hawaii.

The Kona Coast

Located along the Big Island's west coast, Kona was the traditional seat of government for generations of Hawaiian kings, up to the time of King Kamehameha. It's noted for its excellent beaches, luxury resort hotels, and, of course, the world famous coffee grown just inland. Kona is also known worldwide as the site of the annual Ironman Triathlon.

Hilo

Hilo, on the island's east coast, is a quieter, more traditional part of the big island of Hawaii. The area is home to a number of black sand beaches, the famous orchid farms, and the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut factory.

Hulihe'e Palace

The Hulihe'e Palace is the former summer home of the Hawaiian royalty. Located along the waterfront on the Kona coast, the six-room formal house is open to the public. It contains much of the original furniture as well as artifacts and photographs from the Kalakaua dynasty. The two spacious lanais are the site of frequent free concerts. The palace is just a short stroll from the Kailua Pier in Kona for those arriving on the island by ship.

Visiting the Big Island of Hawaii

Hawaii is accessible by plane from Honolulu to the airport at Kona or Hilo. In addition, cruise ships call irregularly at the ports of both cities.

Accommodations on the Big Island of Hawaii vary widely, from small, family-run bed and breakfast inns to large resort hotels. Some of the major resorts include:

  • Kona Village - This luxurious, Hawaiian-style resort sits on 82 acres along the Kona coast. Accommodations at the resort are located in 125 traditional, thatch-roofed hales(round huts). These distinctive cottages have from one or two rooms and private lanais. Many units have private whirlpool spas. The tempo is relaxed at the Kona Village and rooms do not have telephones or television sets.
  • Waikoloa Beach Resort - Located along the Kohala Coast on the northwest side of the island of Hawaii, this 1350-acre resort offers the ultimate in luxury while keeping the Hawaii customs. Accommodations include a range of hotel and condo units. The resort amenities include a championship golf course and a sprawling Hawaiian shopping village.

Condos are also popular on Hawaii and generally offer more space plus the option to prepare some or all of your own meals.

A car rental is a big asset when visiting Hawaii. Although sightseeing tours to the major attractions are common, having a car allows you to explore the areas not right on the tourist path.
