About Holly Springs

The town of Holly Springs, Georgia is in Cherokee county and is located only a short distance off of I-575. Holly Springs was incorporated in 1906 and celebrated its centennial in the summer of 2006. It is a railroad town built around a train depot for the L&N Railroad. The depot was restored in the 1990's and is now the Town's Community Center.

History

Throughout the twentieth century, the town was supported mainly by agriculture and lumber trades, but there was also gold mining and marble (verde antique) quarrying in the area. Nowadays, it's coming very close to being engulfed by the Atlanta suburbs.

The Mystery of the Hughes Monument

There is a monument at the town's center recognizing Holly Springs as the birthplace of Julian M. Hughes. The monument is a bit of a mystery as there is no particular reason for honoring Mr. Hughes, yet somebody placed it prominently in the middle of town. Apparently, Hughes relocated to the Midwest and sent the monument back in a fit of home sickness.

There is a small park in the middle of the town by the tracks called "Brackett Plaza".
