Lake Hubbard Cottages
From LoveToKnow Travel
Renting one of the many Lake Hubbard Cottages available is a great way to enjoy the plethora of manmade and natural wonders to be found in Northern Michigan. Beautiful all year round, the area offers a wide array of outdoor sports in the summer months, including boating, fishing, swimming, and golf.
What to Do at Lake Hubbard
Lake Hubbard is seven miles long by two miles wide and is the second largest freshwater lake in Michigan. The lake is known throughout the Midwest for its excellent trout, walleye, bass, and yellow perch fishing.
In addition to fishing and boating, the nearby Lake Huron shoreline is dotted with historic lighthouses, seafood restaurants, and picturesque lakeside communities. Also within driving distance is Mackinac Island, the Victorian-style resort island, situated between Lower and Upper Michigan. Here, visitors can enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride, lunch at the fabled Grand Hotel, and shopping in the island's many art and antique stores.
Getting to Lake Hubbard, Michigan
Lake Hubbard is an easy drive from Detroit, Saginaw, East Lansing, Flint, and other Michigan cities. It's also just a few miles from Alpena Michigan and that city's small airport. The drive up to Lake Hubbard from Bay City, along Michigan Route 23, hugs the Lake Huron shoreline and is one of the most beautiful drives in the country.
Where to Find Cottages for Rent
A number of online brokers represent cottage-owners that are seeking to rent their property for a week, a night, or a season. Among these are:
- Great Rentals – This broker generally has a wide selection of cottages, from small bungalows to large cottages. Amenities vary greatly with each property. Some include Internet access, modern kitchens, and cable TV. Others are more rustic. Many also offer lake access and water views.
- Michigan.Org – Michigan.org, the official tourism site for the state of Michigan, includes a page for cottage and cabin rentals at Hubbard Lake. Again, the size and amenities offered at each property varies widely.
- Michigan Vacations – Another Michigan vacation Web site with a cottage listing page for Hubbard Lake.
In addition to the above sources, a Google search early in the summer season will generally yield dozens of private listing on platforms, such as Craigslist and MySpace, even some private Web site for individual properties.
Renting Lake Hubbard Cottages
The Hubbard Lake area offers a number of cottages, cabins, private homes, and condos for rent. Most abut the water and some offer private docks. Amenities vary widely, with some offering Internet access, cable TV, and other modern features, and others being more rustic abodes. Most rentals sleep from two to six persons.
Like most vacation rentals and many bed and breakfast inns, Lake Hubbard cottages generally require a 20 to 50 percent deposit with the balance due 30-60 days prior to your arrival. Payments are usually non-refundable should you have to cancel your plans unless the property can be re-rented. As with any financial transaction, it's wise to be cautious when dealing with individuals and companies unknown to you. To guard against fraud, consider the following:
- Pay with a Credit Card, when possible – Virtually all credit card companies offer protection to the buyer if you don't receive the services or item for which you paid.
- Check with the Lake Hubbard Better Business Bureau – If you are dealing with a local Lake Hubbard realtor, check the company's record with the city's BBB.
- Ask for References – Most reputable realtors and rental agencies will be happy to give you names of satisfied customers. Ask for these references and actually call the people. It's probably the best insight you can get into a company's business practices.
