Spring Break Travel

From LoveToKnow Travel

Spring break travel is a must for thousands of American college students each year. The two weeks between winter and spring classes, usually in March or April, see hordes of students flying to beach destinations – and others – all over the world. The only thing these places have in common is that they are fun, affordable, and ready to party. Some of the most popular choices are discussed below:

Panama City is a popular destination for spring break travel.

Florida Beaches

Florida is "the" traditional favorite among spring break travelers. Coastal cities, such as Fort Lauderdale and Daytona Beach have been welcoming students for generations. Today, these cities are joined by Panama City, on Florida's Panhandle coast and the South Beach area of Miami as spring break destinations.

Mexico

Mexico's warm weather, warm hospitality, and affordable prices make it a favorite year after year. Cancun, on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, along the Caribbean Sea, offers long stretches of beach, vibrant nightlife, and historical sites, such as the Mayan ruins at Tulum and Chichen Itza.

Puerto Vallarta, along Mexico's Pacific coast is a pretty little fishing village turned world-class resort. The lifestyle is casual; the prices low; and the action nonstop!

Rosarito Beach on Mexico's Baja Peninsula, just 20 miles south of San Diego, has become a popular spring break travel destination in the last couple of years. The town offers great beaches, sunny weather, outdoor cafes, and a warm welcome.

Other Spring Break Travel Destinations

In addition to Florida and Mexico, the following destinations are popular with spring break travelers:

  • South Padre Island, Texas – A favorite spring break travel destination for decades, this Texan playground offers hundreds of miles of beach, fresh seafood, and every imaginable kind of watersport.
  • Negril, Jamaica – One of the best beaches in the world, the six-mile beach at Negril in[1] offers casual fun, cheap accommodations, and an non-stop party
  • Nassau, Bahamas – Just a short plane ride from South Florida, Nassau offers long stretches of white sand beach, a variety of watersports, and casino gambling – all with a decidedly British flair. For 2007, the Bahamas is also offering to refund the fees for getting a new passport, now required for those flying to the island.
  • Winter Park, Colorado – Not all spring break travel needs to be about beaches. Ski resorts are an increasingly popular alternative and Winter Park, about 45 minutes west of Denver, is one of the best for young travelers. The casual, friendly resort offers affordable housing, accessible public transportation, and world-class skiing.

Helping Others on Spring Break

One increasingly popular alternative to the traditional spring break beach vacation is spending spring break helping others. Last year, thousands of college students traveled down to the Gulf area to help rebuild communities destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. In fact, companies have sprung up that match students and charity projects needing volunteer labor. Habitat for Humanity welcomes volunteers in points throughout the world and companies, such as I-to-I match travelers with volunteer projects aboard.
